learning "the South" again

So... we have now been here (in South Carolina) for close to 3 months now, and it's funny how I have forgotten some things about "southern living" and I'm having to relearn them now that I've moved back. You might be wondering what I'm talking about... so I'll tell you. Boyd and I both grew up in Arkansas, but pretty much since I graduated High School I've lived out west (Utah, Idaho, and Seattle). I've been back home for a few summers and of course to visit often... but now that I'm living in the South again I've realized that I forgot what it's like. This is what I'm talking about...

#1. The Heat: Okay... it really is cooling down now and the weather really has been beautiful for the past couple weeks, but July and August were HOT! I forgot... I truly forgot how you feel like you're melting walking from the store to your car. Ben is hilarious about this. He starts to whine and cover his eyes when we walk outside, "Mom... I need my sunglasses! It's too sunny." I guess when you spend most of the three years of your life in Seattle and then Move to South Carolina... the Sun really is a new concept. Actually, I even had to get used to the sun. It was a big change going from overcast Seattle (which I love in a lot of ways) to here (I love it here too). The only time clouds come around here is when a huge storm comes in with crazy lightning and heavy rain. Different from misty Seattle.

#2. Mosquitos (bugs/spiders): Hello!! There are no bugs in the west... I don't care what any of you might think. I stepped outside to take some pictures of Ben and Chase in our backyard (which is awesome that I could do that... we have a yard!) and I counted about 12 bug bites when I got inside. I was out there for 3 minutes!! I even had two bites on each butt cheek (maybe a little too much info). But how in the world did they get there? I've learned to keep the bug spray handy and I use it often. Then (within the same afternoon) Boyd found this spider hanging off the side of our house and it was the biggest spider I've ever seen (a Banana spider?) not in a cage. crazy.

#3. Clothes: I love skirts and flip flops now and I don't know what we're going to do with our numberless jackets/coats.

Anyways... Here are some pictures of some of the stuff that we've been up to in the last few weeks.

These are the pictures I was taking of Ben and Chase in our backyard, while the swarm of mosquitos were attacking me.

I love that. there was a smudge on the lens of my camera so all of these are kind of blurry... but I still like them.

dinner time
Chase liked it

I've been taking Chase to this park right near where Ben goes to preschool and I love the gorgeous oaks there.
eww... I just love him. This child has some attitude though... don't be decieved. He's so fun, but when he doesn't get what he wants I think my neighbors probably hear him scream.
beautiful... I'm officially a tree hugger.

My dad came to visit!! SO FUN! He had a business trip out here and spent one night with us. It was a short trip, but not a dull moment. Thanks Dad... we love you.
This picture turned out great even with me holding the camera out.
Ben's first day of School!! He was so excited and he is loving it. I had him on 5 different waiting lists and this one called me back and it's awesome (my prayers were answered). It's in the older part of town and I like having an excuse to drive over there all the time because it's gorgeous with the old plantation houses and huge oaks with the spanish moss.
what a cutie

On Labor day we went to one of the beaches that we haven't been to yet and it was fun. And I'll be honest... I'm putting these pictures on here to try my very hardest to tempt you to come and see us. The beach is nice... you should make a visit.

come see us :)

I love these pictures. I'm tempted to buy one of those sweet cameras that take those super clear pictures... but I don't have the money. My birthday was last week if anyone wants to send a sweet belated gift... maybe?

good little bike ride
new hair cut
I hadn't cleaned up breakfast yet and was doing my hair. Chase cleaned up before I did. Funny Chase.

love you all... keep in touch.

It's funny...the only two things I don't miss from our 4 years of living in NC are the HOT summers and the YUCKY bugs. I miss friends and everything else. I also miss wearing my summer clothes. The "lack of heat" is something I had to get used to when we moved to Seattle. Just think of all the vitamin D your family is getting now!

I would LOVE to come visit and hangout at the beach. I would also LOVE a super nice camera. Maybe we could give eachother a camera since we share the same birthday.

I do miss the heat, but not the bugs. And since the two go hand in hand . . . I think I'll stick with the occasional hobo spider and no ticks/fleas/roaches/mosquitos. We do have mosquitos, but my chickens do a pretty good job at eating them before they hatch.

The beach looks fabulous--I'm glad yo got to see Dad! And your boys, hello . . . the cutest.

I love the picture of you, your dad and the boys with you holding the camera. So cute! I wish we could have figured how to get my family down there for the beaches. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving!

Amen to the sun thing. My kids were totally the same way when we moved to Utah.

Totally know what you mean about the "South" :) I've been down in TX for 5 years, and I'm still not used to the bugs (HUGE!!), the heat (am I seriously sweating this much)? And the clothes too. Living in Idaho my WHOLE LIFE, I have tons of winter clothes that I only wear for a few weeks here! But we do love it here. And Carter has spent his whole life in TX and still acts that way about the sun :) Anyway, glad you're doing great in SC! We've missed you guys since college!
